Something not working right? Before you call for help, try these quick fixes. 90% of AC issues can be solved in under 10 minutes.

 

Section 1: Cooling Problems (Not Cold Enough)

 

Q1: My AC is running, but the room isn't getting cold. Why?

A: This is the most common issue. Let's troubleshoot step by step:

For All Units:

  1. Check the filter: A dirty air filter is the #1 culprit. Remove and clean it (warm soapy water, let dry completely before reinserting).

  2. Check the thermostat: Is it set to "COOL" mode (not just FAN)? Is the temperature set lower than the current room temp?

  3. Check for heat sources: Are curtains open? Is the sun blasting in? Are there electronics generating heat near the thermostat?

  4. Check room size: Is this unit rated for a larger room than you're using it in? Double-check our BTU guide.

For Portable Units Only:

  1. Check the exhaust hose: Is it kinked or crushed? Is it too long (longer than 5 feet reduces efficiency)? Is it properly sealed in the window?
  2. Single vs Dual Hose: If you have a single-hose unit, it's pulling conditioned air from inside the room and pushing it outside (creating negative pressure). This is normal but less efficient.

For Split Systems Only:

  1. Check the outdoor unit: Is it blocked by debris, leaves, or bushes? Does it have at least 2 feet of clearance?
  2. Check for ice: Turn off the unit for 2 hours. If ice melts and then it works, you likely have a refrigerant issue (contact support).

 

Q2: My AC blows cold air, then warm air, then cold again. Is it broken?

A: Probably not! This is normal operation:

  • Auto Defrost Cycle: If the outdoor coil gets too cold, the unit reverses to defrost itself (like a fridge). This takes 5-10 minutes. Warm air may blow briefly.

  • Set Temperature Reached: The compressor cycles off when the room hits your set temp. The fan may keep running, blowing room-temperature (not cold) air. This means it's working correctly.

When to worry: If it blows consistently warm for over 30 minutes, check Q1.

 

Q3: My portable AC keeps shutting off after a few minutes.

A: This is usually one of three things:

  1. Overheating: The compressor gets hot. Is the exhaust hose properly vented? Is the back of the unit too close to a wall? Needs at least 20 inches of clearance.

  2. Full Water Tank: Many portable ACs have an internal tank. If the "Full Tank" light is on, it's shutting down to prevent overflow. Drain it (usually via a plug at the back).

  3. Wrong Voltage: Are you using an extension cord? Don't. Plug directly into the wall. Voltage drops cause the compressor to fail startup.

 


 

Section 2: Noise Problems (Too Loud / Strange Sounds)

 

Q4: My AC is making a rattling or vibrating noise.

A: Rattling = something loose.

  1. Check the front panel: Is it snapped on all the way?

  2. Check the filter: Is it sitting flush?

  3. Check for loose objects: Screws, coins, or debris inside the unit? (Shine a flashlight through the grille).

  4. Window Units: Is the unit tilted slightly backward? It should be tilted so the outside is slightly lower than the inside (for drainage). If it's level or tilted forward, vibration increases.

  5. Portable Units: Is it on a hard floor? Place it on a thick mat or rubber pad to absorb vibration.

 

Q5: I hear a buzzing or humming sound. Is that bad?

A:

  • Soft hum: Normal (compressor or fan motor running).

  • Loud buzz: Could be electrical. Check:

    • Is the plug fully inserted?

    • Is the outlet grounded properly?

    • Are you using a GFCI outlet? Some GFCI outlets are sensitive to motor startup. Try a different outlet.

If buzzing is accompanied by burning smell, turn off immediately and contact support.

 

Q6: My AC sounds like water is gurgling or sloshing inside.

A: Great news — this is normal!

  • Gurgling: Refrigerant flowing through the system. Like water through a pipe.

  • Sloshing: Condensation collecting inside. The unit is dehumidifying properly.

When to worry: If you hear loud clanking (metal on metal), that's not normal.

 


 

Section 3: Water Leaks & Moisture

 

Q7: Water is dripping from the front of my AC.

A:
For Window Units:

  • Installation angle is wrong. The unit MUST tilt downward toward the OUTSIDE. The back should be about 1/2 inch to 1 inch lower than the front. This lets water drain outside, not inside.

  • Solution: Carefully adjust the unit's tilt. Shim the inside sill if needed.

For Portable Units:

  • High humidity mode: In very humid weather, the internal tank fills faster.

  • Solution: Most portables have a continuous drain option. Attach a garden hose to the drain port and route it to a bucket or floor drain.

 

Q8: Water is pooling around the outdoor unit of my split system.

A:

  • Normal: In heating mode (if you use it in winter), the outdoor unit defrosts and creates water/ice. This melts and puddles.

  • Not normal: In cooling mode, the outdoor unit should NOT have standing water. This could indicate a blocked drain line from the indoor unit, or a refrigerant issue.

  • Check: Look at the indoor unit first. Is that one leaking? If indoor is dry but outdoor is wet, call a technician (the refrigerant line insulation may be broken).

 

Q9: There's ice on my AC (indoor unit or pipes).

A: Ice = airflow problem or refrigerant problem.

  1. TURN OFF THE AC IMMEDIATELY. Run only the fan to help melt the ice.

  2. Check the filter: Is it clogged? Clean it.

  3. Check the fan: Is the blower wheel spinning? If not, motor may be dead.

  4. Wait 2-3 hours for ice to fully melt. Then turn cooling back on.

  5. If ice returns within a day: You likely have a refrigerant leak. This requires professional service. Contact warranty@mohavair.com.

 


 

Section 4: Remote Control & Display Issues

 

Q10: My remote control isn't working.

A: Before you blame the remote, try these:

  1. Batteries: Replace them (even if they look okay). Use fresh alkalines, not old ones from the drawer.

  2. Point correctly: IR remotes need line of sight. Is something blocking the sensor on the unit?

  3. Sensor location: On portable units, the sensor is usually behind the front grille. On splits, it's on the indoor unit (look for a small dark window).

  4. Phone test: Use your phone camera. Point the remote at the camera and press a button. If you see a purple/white light through the phone, the remote works (it's the unit's sensor that's bad). If no light, remote is dead.

Q11: My AC display shows "E1", "E2", or "F0" error codes.

A: Error codes vary by brand, but here are common Mohavair codes:



Code Meaning Quick Fix
E1 / E2 Temperature sensor error Unplug for 5 minutes, restart. If persists, sensor may need replacement.
E3 / E4 Fan speed error Check if fan is spinning freely (not blocked).
E5 Communication error (split systems) Check wiring between indoor and outdoor units (pro only).
F0 Refrigerant leak detection System detects low gas. Contact professional service.
P1 Tray full (portable only) Drain water tank.

Section 5: Odors & Air Quality

 

Q12: My AC smells bad when I turn it on.

A:

Musty / Moldy smell:

  • Cause: Moisture + dust = mold growing on the filter or inside the unit.

  • Fix: Clean the filter thoroughly. For portable units, check the water tank — empty, clean with vinegar solution. Run the unit on FAN mode for a few hours to dry out the inside.

Burning smell:

  • Cause: Dust burning off the heating element (if first use of the season) or electrical issue.

  • Fix: If it's first use, it may clear in 10 minutes. If it persists or smells like plastic burning, turn off immediately and unplug. Contact support.

 



Section 6: Installation & Setup Questions

 

Q13: I just installed my window AC, and it fell out!

A: (We hope this didn't happen, but if you're reading this before installation...)

Safety First:

  1. Window ACs MUST be secured. They cannot just "sit" on the window sash alone.

  2. Use the included brackets: Most units come with L-brackets or side panels that screw into the window frame.

  3. For extra safety: Buy a window AC support bracket (sold in our Accessories section) that mounts to the exterior wall or window sill.

If it did fall and is damaged, stop using it. Contact warranty immediately.

 

Q14: My portable AC window kit doesn't fit my window.

A: This happens. Standard kits fit vertical or horizontal sliding windows up to 48 inches.

Solutions:

  1. Casement windows? Standard kits won't work. You need a custom venting kit (search "casement window AC kit").

  2. Gap too big/small? You can buy universal window seal kits or use foam board + tape as a DIY fix.
